Vivid and cool, the Mandala I have created this January incorporates some of the elements and motifs that I love the most. In that respect it is a personal meditation rather than what you would typically expect to see in a Mandala. With my compass, I drew various basic circles, but then repositioned it so that it cut across to produce arching divisions reminiscent of a butterfly. From the color wheel I chose a basic triad of Red, Blue and Yellow which gives the pattern stability. Motifs that I especially love, flowers and plant life, are repeatedly placed in a symmetrical pattern. The element of repetition plays a major part in the whole design as colors, motifs and shapes echo each other. I even had the opportunity to make use of what is called a Happy Accident. The blue marker that I was using on the Mandala turned out to be defective. A big blob of color slid out right where the internal square intersects the blue outer ring. What to do? Should I quit and start all over again? I liked what I had already done. Then an opportunity appeared. I could make matching blobs on the other three corners of the square. Not bad, I thought. I’ll keep it !
