Contrast in Art - A Difference that Creates Harmony

Contrast in Artwork is what gives it life, provides variety, and attracts your attention. It is one of the main Principles in Art. So what is Contrast exactly? Well, it is the juxtaposition, the putting close together, or the placing side by side of two different Elements of Art. Light and Dark areas, Complementary Colors, Shapes that are different in Size, and Areas that are different in Texture are all examples of elements that can be used to create interest. When it comes to the Focal Point of a painting, often the lightest lights and the darkest darks will be found right there, and, your eye will be attracted to these differences.

Surprisingly, these areas of Dark and Light/ Black and White can at the same time create a sense of Harmony as is seen in the Yin Yang symbol of Chinese philosophy where the opposing forces of light and dark actually compliment each other and create a dynamic balance.

See below my drawing where I have used the Yin Yang symbol as the focal point of a larger, yet still harmonious pattern of Black and White.
